“I was able to stand on the shoulders of those women who came before me, and women who came after me were able to stand on mine.” Christine Darden, aerospace engineer
We are a non-profit of active STEM professionals, with an emphasis on women and BIPOC minorities, who serve as role models aka "DreamKeepers" for youth in high-schools.
OneSTEM Village actively guides students by helping them map paths to successful careers in STEM industries.
OneSTEM Village Fellows are a diverse community of STEM professionals at various stages of their careers including STEM undergrad and grad students, post-graduates, experienced professionals and senior leaders in their fields.
"We look at science as something very elite, which only a few people can learn. That's just not true. You just have to start early and give kids a foundation. Kids live up, or down, to expectations." -Mae Jemison, first Black woman in space
Disparities in STEM education, unfortunately exist, between students from different socio-economic backgrounds and genders.
Fewer women and BIPOC pursue STEM careers because of a reduced access to quality STEM education, the lack of encouragement to pursue STEM from an early age as well as the lack of women and BIPOC STEM role models.
The lack of professional connections and the lack of BIPOCs in leadership positions, make it challenging for for first generation BIPOCs to find adequate job opportunities and to further advance their careers.
"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about". — Margaret Wheatley
OneSTEM Village actively partners with under-resourced high schools that serve disadvantaged communities.
Culturally relevant role models and mentors who the youth can identify with, are essential in helping BIPOC youth believe in themselves, overcome obstacles, and pursue STEM careers.
By sharing their diverse and engaging STEM career stories, OneSTEM Village "DreamKeepers" illustrate the unique set of values that are shared among STEM professionals, including curiosity, perseverance, grit and objectivity.
“I hope you will go out and let stories, that is life, happen to you, and that you will work with these stories... water them with your blood and tears and your laughter till they bloom, till you yourself burst into bloom.” - ― Clarissa Pinkola Estés, first-generation American writer and psychoanalyst.
